to the recent san francisco international poetry festival from iraq i've been in touch with for more than a year and a half. after the united states would not give him his visa, i asked him -- i told him about mutanabbi street and he wrote a poem and he wrote it in english, though he writes in, of course, in arabic. but this one he wrote in english. so i'll read it. one figure in the poem you should know, humbaba, which is an ogre, a monster of immemorial age. that was a special big garden, a forest, where all types of trees and flowers grew. the trees bending down gently flinging branches. our orchard grew like a crown on the sun's eyebrow. where did humbaba come from? his mother was just a cave, his father unknown. who made him a friend pretending guardian of the orchard. did those nice shrubs need fear to go begging for a garden and have humbaba in his treachery ilk. those plants and flowers were like books everyone could read, not cut and throw away. their different fantastic colors had formed our blood so our veins ran smoothly, our 7 wonders showed. then humbaba made a whirlwind of fire an

expert and interpreter, he established a death services program ast san francisco state university, provided support services for colleges. we don't call them disabled. they happen to have a disability. he joined pacific bell, helped organize honda the advisory group for people that happen to have a disability. he gave them put to that company on how to develop features that will help them do better. he became the director of death and disabled services. he was executive director for berkeley in 2001. under dmitri's direction, they have expanded it, they have done so many different things. i can't even less the mall. he sends people out that happen to be disabled and of a test things. before they get out there, to make sure that they are done the right way. so they can practically help people. it is my pleasure right now. give a warm welcome cojones -- to mr. dmitri belzer. all neighborhoods. the target places like san francisco because this is an old city with old buildings, virtually none of which comply. we only have new construction that would be billed to 1988 compliance standards, usually. whatever kind of business you have, the building part does not enforce ada compliance. you have your architect look at the ada if you are going to make a major revision anyway. is very expensive to do that. the demand letter is a requirment for the state -- is a requirement for the state laws to be brought. for civil rights cases, you are expected to know the law and be in compliance. they do not make a demand under federal law saying they should ask you for damages. and the damages could be substantial. the damages are based on the number of barriers encountered by the person when they're going to inspect the premises. these people will come and visit your business barack, three, or four times. they will sit at the counter if you have a counter. they will sit at a table. that are well aware of what the legal requirements are of the height of the table and the len

, at 3:21 in the morning, news, and the cad reads, san francisco hilton, rp, loud music coming from 1020, means the location, from naan-n-curry. and this one is from july 27, 2012. this is at 2:44 in the morning. and we have let's see, this is just a person calling about this place here. we have another trespasser. this is july the 27th. and this is at 2:30 in the morning from naan-n-curry. and then we have another trespasser, and this is 3:00 in the morning. and let's see, it says, inside naan-n-curry a male being aggressive with other customers. and this one is september 2, at 2:30 in the morning, the cad reads, 30 people inside, fight, trespasser, and it reads a female caller. and these are mostly males fighting inside the restaurant. and like i said, this is at 2:30 in the morning. another cad called. this is 4:21 in the morning and this is september the second. and the cad reads, wireless call from verizon, naan-n-curry but it sounds like there is a problem inside. and then gave a couple of street names, there was a fight inside naan-n-curry. subjects involved and they left the rest

or the culture unfortunately because i was born in san francisco, half chinese and half japanese but raised in the chinese culture. when it was time to write the second book and i knew i wanted to explore my japanese side it was going to be difficult in the way that i didn't know the culture. right away i had to learn a lot. it was something that was not engrained in me besides the story. i sat down and thought about the story my mother told me about her brother being ill. he at one point went from hong kong to japan to recuperate. he was the one that wanted to be an artist and wanted to paint. i thought about that because it must have been hard growing up in hong kong to be far away from everything and have a dream and get sick at this point. i thought u is there a story here? that's the way it begins for writers. people think things jump out and we have it in our head. it's the opposite we have nothing in our head. we turn on the machine and praying for something to come. with women of the silk i researched for 6 amongs and read and read and read. in one book i found 2 lines about the wom

these things, it certainly reminds us of how important our system is to san francisco and how when things aren't going well, it can really adversely impact people in a pretty significant way. so, i didn't want to let the meeting go by without acknowledging that. >> so, moving on to brighter things, we recently completed a project at outbound market street -- on outbound market street at valencia, to make left turns work better for cyclists. the way it had worked is that cyclistses would merge across the two lanes of traffic and across the f-line tracks, both of which cause safety issues for everybody, for both motorists, for f line operators and for cyclists. so, what we've done is put a cut out on the right so the left turning traffic goes to the right, waits for a signal which they now have from signal change to give them a protected green, that allows them to safely cross in absence of traffic and perp dishtion lard to the tracks to make for a much safer environment. we've got new signage and pavement markings to make that clear. as everybody was stuck on the subway, i rode my bike yesterda

$75 ticket or whatever, they're going to decide they're not going to shop in san francisco. you're trying to get people to take public transit. they're not going to take all their bags shopping on the bus and go home. they just bought a nice expensive coat, birthday present for their spouse or their significant other and they're not going to want to carry it on the bus and have someone steal it from them, you know. a lot of people still don't feel safe being on public transit. i think that -- i can the thing is, though, if you keep costing more and more to come into the city, especially on sundays, you're going to be cutting off your nose despite your face. that's all i'm going to say about that. and also, you need to make sure you address the concerns of the religious community -- not the religious, the church communities because all you're going to do as i said, discourage people from coming to church. and god knows we all need to go to a religious service once in a while. thank you. >> thank you. anyone else care to address the board? seeing none, we'll go to the consent cale

of options out there. we serve to the indian community, which is a huge, huge population now in san francisco. and we serve them vegetarian and vegan which is a stricter diet, i guess. and we actually prepare the food fresh. so nothing is deep fried or made that was frozen and reserved. so it will take a little more effort on our part to actually produce this food and it will take a while to deliver and take a while to sit and seat the meal as well. so it is a little bit different than the restaurants around the corner from us. so it happens and that we are in a strange situation where we actually have four 24/7 restaurants half a block away from us. i actually drew a map in the back and so you could go to slide six or seven and a map that shows that we are next to the cafe, and jack in the box at 24/7 and cafination and a diner. by, or most of the time, this restaurant is a very quiet, family, with children running around, that kind of a place. unfortunately, we are also some what have to be on the weekends between the hours of 2:00 to 4:00 a crowd that comes out of clubs and ambassadors and

york, laguardia, jfk. boston as well. laguardia to newark to boston. san francisco has had four-hour delays. now 3 1/2 hours and it is weather-related there, too. ft. lauderdale is having a volume issue. this is the exiting storm, this rain that is leaving. skies are drying out but temperatures will drop precipitously. this is where the travel will really get tough. rochester, buffalo, six to 12 inches of knsnow coming for the. washington, baltimore, clears out for tomorrow and sunday. although it will still be windy. there's the heavy snow in western new york. driving i-90 through the weekend is really difficult. as we head towards sunday, this is the biggest travel headache from seattle all the way down to san francisco. northern california does some very heavy rain and wind for the next couple of days. lisa? >> sounds like everyone is going to have to really be patient as they try to get home for the holidays. >> yes. >> alexandra, thanks. it's not going to be easy but we'll see, hopefully it won't be too much of a travel headache. >> patience is important. lisa, thank you. >
